The Girl with the Matchsticks is a fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen. It is about a poor girl who tries in vain to sell matchsticks on a cold New Year's Eve. When she freezes to death and has no hope, she lights the sticks one by one to warm herself. Visions of warmth, food, and her deceased mother appear to her in the flames. The next morning, the girl is found dead in the snow, but her spirit has gone to a better world where she finds peace and happiness.
In this musical interpretation, five girls tell different tales of woe and two conferencers act as antagonists.
The costumes were designed together with Rebecca Stein and brought to the stage in several performances as part of a collaboration with the singing class at the Hanover University of Music, Drama, and Media. The production was directed by Roman Hovenbitzer.
